From a procurement perspective, a 2 MW generator set is rarely bought as a standalone machine. It is bought as a repeatable building block within a redundancy scheme, which means the supplier evaluation has to cover parallel control, factory testing and derated output as well as the nameplate rating.
MPMC POWERTECH CORP. was established in 2008 and is headquartered in Shanghai Pudong. According to MPMC’s published company materials, it supplies diesel, gas, methanol and biofuel generator sets alongside battery energy storage systems and hybrid power stations, with products delivered to more than 120 countries and territories.

MPMC containerised diesel generator sets. Single-engine containerised configurations are documented from 800 to 3,750 kVA.
Why Hyperscale Sites Specify Units in the 2 MW Class
Hyperscale facilities build backup capacity from multiple units rather than from one large machine. The reasoning is availability. A single failure removes one block instead of the whole backup system, and maintenance can be carried out without leaving the site unprotected.
A 2 MW-class unit suits that model. It supports high-density IT load, fits N+1 and 2N schemes, and lets capacity be added in defined increments as halls come online.
The rating on the datasheet is only the starting point. Prime and standby ratings are defined differently, and the applicable basis depends on how the facility intends to run the unit. That should be settled before quotations are compared.

The MCLS2000H(S)-1 is the model to review where a campus distributes at medium voltage. Direct output at 10 to 11 kV reduces transmission losses over long cable runs, which matters when the generator yard sits some distance from the halls.
Other engine brands are available on the same containerised platform. MPMC lists PERKINS, MTU, BAUDOUIN, SCANIA, SME, VOLVO and SDEC as engine options, paired with STAMFORD or LEROY SOMER alternators.
Parallel Operation and Transfer Control
Multi-unit behaviour depends on the controller and switchgear package rather than on the engine. MPMC’s documented data centre configuration lists DSE 4520 MKII for automatic mains failure operation, or DEIF AGC 150 where parallel synchronisation is required, with motorised circuit breakers from ABB or Schneider.
Three points are worth confirming in writing for any hyperscale scheme:
• The load-sharing method and how it behaves when one unit is unavailable.
• The ISO 8528-5 performance class for load acceptance. MPMC’s CNAS-documented models are listed as compliant with ISO 8528-5:2018, GB/T 2820.5-2009, ISO 3046 and ISO 12944.
• Steady-state control. MPMC’s published parameters list frequency stability of ≤±0.25% at any constant load and voltage regulation of ±1%.
Factory Testing and What the Accreditation Covers
MPMC’s Haimen facility in Jiangsu is described in company materials as a 22,000 m² workshop with a 4,000 m² office area and a CNAS-accredited testing centre. The published test protocol covers load steps at 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% and 110% before shipment, carried out in a test system with five power-section rooms including a constant-temperature room simulating 40°C and 50°C.
This should be read precisely. A CNAS-accredited testing centre is a recognition of that facility. It is not a statement that every delivered unit carries the same accreditation. For a hyperscale order, request the factory acceptance test scope, the witness test option and the report for the units being supplied.

These indicate the class of project supplied. They are not a performance guarantee for a different site.

MPMC HBD-A Series, HBD-1000-2000. 1,125 kW rated AC power, 2,170 kWh capacity, liquid cooling.
Where Battery Storage Fits Alongside the Generator Set
Storage is increasingly specified alongside standby generation rather than instead of it. Battery systems respond in milliseconds and manage demand peaks without combustion, while sustained outage cover still depends on fuel.
MPMC’s HBD-A series is listed at 125 kW to 1,125 kW rated AC power and 261 kWh to 2,170 kWh capacity, using LFP 314 Ah cells rated at 8,000 cycles at 90% depth of discharge, with liquid cooling, IP54 system protection and IP67 battery pack protection. Supported modes include PQ, VF, VSG, black start and grid-forming.
Whether a hybrid arrangement is justified depends on the tariff structure, the outage profile and the emissions target at the specific site.
The Specification Lines That Decide the Award
Most 2 MW tenders are won or lost on six lines rather than on price.
|

Why it decides the outcome |
What to request |
|
Rating basis |
A standby-rated set is a different machine from a prime-rated one |
The basis stated on every quotation, matched to the intended duty |
|
Derated output at site |
Reference-condition ratings are not comparable across sites |
The calculation at actual ambient and altitude. MPMC lists 50°C maximum ambient with copper high-temperature radiator options, and derating typically applying above 1,000 to 1,525 m |
|
Load acceptance class |
Determines behaviour in the first seconds after mains failure |
The ISO 8528-5 performance class for the offered configuration |
|
Control and switchgear |
Governs parallel operation and transfer |
The controller and breaker package by brand and model |
|
Factory test scope |
Separates a tested unit from a tested design |
Test scope, witness option and the report format |
|
Enclosure and fuel autonomy |
Sets service life and refuelling logistics |
ISO 12944 class, with C4 standard and C5 available, and tank sizing at 6, 8, 12 or 24 hours |
Warranty and service sit alongside these. MPMC’s published policy for diesel generator sets is 1 year or 1,000 operating hours, whichever comes first, with engine, alternator and controller coverage following the respective OEM’s terms. The named local service centre for the selected engine brand should be identified before award, not after.
Two Numbers That Are Not Interchangeable
The recurring error in this class of procurement is treating a nameplate figure as a site figure.
A set listed at 2,000 kVA prime under reference conditions will deliver measurably less at 45°C and 1,500 m. A hyperscale scheme built from four such units, each quietly short of its assumed output, arrives at a redundancy position nobody intended.
Ask for the derated number early, put it in the comparison table, and treat the reference rating as a catalogue label rather than a commitment.
