Plastic pollution stands as a significant environmental challenge in modern society, with its impact on marine ecosystems being particularly severe. G-COVE has compiled the main impacts of plastic on the ocean:
1. Injury and Ingestion of Marine Life: Large amounts of plastic waste entering the ocean become lethal traps for marine animals. Marine creatures often mistake plastic bags, plastic fragments, fishing lines, etc., for food, leading to ingestion and choking. Plastic debris may also entangle marine animals, hindering their normal movement, foraging, or reproduction.
2. Toxin Release: Plastics can permeate and adsorb harmful chemicals such as pesticides used by humans and organic compounds in industrial wastewater. When these plastics enter the ocean, these toxins infiltrate the marine food chain, ultimately affecting human food supplies. The accumulation of toxic substances may have long-term effects on the health and survival of marine organisms.
3. Ecosystem Destruction: Plastic pollution disrupts the balance of marine ecosystems. Extensive plastic debris covering the seabed, reefs, and coral reefs hinders the penetration of light, affecting the growth of marine plants and the stability of the ecological chain. This poses a severe threat to the diversity and health of ecosystems such as coral reefs and fish.
4. Economic Impact: The ocean is a crucial resource for human society, including fisheries, tourism, and the livelihoods of coastal residents. To address the severe impact of plastic on the ocean, the international community has acted. Additionally, numerous marine conservation and cleanup projects are underway to reduce plastic waste in the oceans.
However, unilateral efforts are far from sufficient to solve this global problem. G-COVE calls for joint efforts from governments, businesses, and individuals to strengthen sustainable management of plastic production and usage. Promoting the development of innovative technologies and alternative materials, changing consumer habits, establishing marine protected areas, and raising public awareness are essential measures to alleviate the impact of plastic on the ocean.
